3/20/11 – Live Music in Austin Tonight

And tonight it ends.

Over at Threadgill’s they are having a pretty good show.  It starts early but if it were me, I would not get there until around 3:30 or so.  Here is the line up for the Folk Alliance Benefit…

3:45pm: Jimmy LaFave, Kevin Welch, Stonehoney
5:00pm: Danny Barnes, James McMurtry, Gurf Morlix
6:00pm: Willis Alan Ramsey Band w/Roscoe Beck, Jamie Oldaker, & Louis Jay Meyers

Willis is one of my heroes.  He ranks up there with JJ Cale and Willie when it comes to true country songwriting.  I think I will be there.

After Threadgill’s you should boogie over to the Continental Club.  Many music critics from around the world will not leave SXSW until they see the show at the Continental Club tonight.  Doors at 6pm for Alejandro Escoveda bringing together too much talent.

Until next year…

3/18/11 – Live Music in Austin Tonight – SXSW

And the weekend begins… I had a ball cruising around on my bike yesterday to see a bunch of unofficial shows.  Highlights were the Greenhornes (rhythm section of the Raconteurs) and Apex Manor (had to play a fully non miked acoustic set due to noise ordinance).

Ringo Deathstar plays Easy Tiger.  KUT hosts Sarah Jaffe and the North Mississippi Allstars.

At the Saxon is James Hand, Malford Milligan, Deadman and Walt Wilkins.

My highlight will be Texas Music Magazine’s Reader Appreciation Party at Scholz Garten.  Subscribers are admitted for free.  You can see…

1-2 Jamie Richards
2-3 Brennen Leigh
3-4 Robyn Ludwick
4-5 Thieving Birds
5-6 Cory Morrow
6-7 Mingo Fishtrap
7-8 Hacienda
8-9 The Band of Heathens
9-10 Whiskey Myers (Can’t wait to see them!)

3/16/11 – Live Music Tonight in Austin – SXSW

Here we go with SXSW.  Jeez there is some good music here this week.  Tonight it really starts.  Tomorrow it really ramps up.

My recommendations would be to see the Greenhornes (rhythm section from the Raconteurs) at Antone’s at midnight.  Or you might want to check out White Denim and Tennis at Club De Ville.  The Continental Club has a cool showcase (Davis Mclarty Agency) with Dale Watson, the Gourds, Stonehoney and Shineyribs.

There is a free show (who does not like free?) at the Ghost Room sponsored by the city of Austin with Jon Dee Graham, Mother Falcon, Gary Clark Jr., and Maneja Beto.  Mellow Johnny’s has a cool showcase of Texas Latin Artists.

Lastly, Stubbs has a killer show.  Hot on the scene and super young, the Smith Westerns play with Raphael Saadiq and then Duran Duran takes the stage.

And it is just Wednesday…

Rock on!

3/15/11 – Live Music in Austin Tonight – SXSW

Wahoooooo!  It’s finally here!  The time of the year that I love.  More live music than you can shake yo booty at!  That’s right, SXSW!  Who is ready to rock?  This is our first year to have Tuesday night showcases.  Here we go…

For starters, you might want to check out the Band of Heathen’s CD release at Antone’s tonight.  Compose of three songwriters, they used to all play shows on the same night at Momo’s.  Some said they should join up so they did and were originally called the Good Time Supper Club.  When the drummer joined the band they became the Band of Heathens.  I saw them recently at the Saxon.  Good show.

The Foo Fighters play the Paramount and Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears have their CD Release at the Continental Club.

For some SXSW tunes, I would say check out PS I Love You and Surfer Blood at Emos.

Rock on!

OK, peeps, it is just about here.  SXSW is just a day or so away and I am nothing less than stoked!!!

Tonight I would recommend going to see the Trishas do their SXSW kick off party at the Saxon.  Any of you loyal readers know what I think about the Saxon.  Amazing room!  Ever seen the Trishas?  Four part harmonies from 4 amazingly beautiful ladies.  You are sure to be mesmerized by both their beauty and the music.  They hit the stage at 8:30.

The Trishas kick off SXSW tonight at the Saxon

Before the Trishas is Matt the Electrician and after them is Jeff Plankenhorn.  Both Matt and Jeff are excellent guitarists.

Let’s do this!

3/12/11 – Music in Austin and Dallas Tonight

Two shows tonight that I am debating between.  The first is Malford Milligan followed by Dertybird at the Saxon.  I love the swampy sound that Dertybird kicks out with the super soulful vocals and JT’s guitar is insane.  Malford used to front Storyville (Tommy Shannon, Chris Layton).

Another show is at the Threadgills South.  Tonight Shinyribs (front man for the Gourds) opens the show followed by the legendary song writer, Joe Ely.  Good venue.  Amazing talent.

If you are wanting to get out of town or perhaps you might be in Dallas, Austin hometown heroes, Long Woodson are having their CD release party up at the City Tavern in Downtown Dallas.  They go on at 10pm and will rock the town.

Friday nite!  The weekend is here!

My pick for tonight is the Saxon Pub.  At 9pm, Malford Milligan of Storyville fame takes the stage.  After Malford, you should check out Dertybird.  That have an undeniable swampy sound.  JT Holt  hails from Dallas.  They are pictured directly below.

My second pick would be Shinyribs (frontman for the Gourds) followed by Joe Ely at Threadgills downtown.

Rock on!

3-10-11 Live Music in Austin Tonight

It’s a Thursday here in Austin.  What does that mean?  The weekend is almost hear!  Music!

Tonight Anders Osborne is playing at Antones.  You can take a listen to him at http://www.myspace.com/andersosbornenola.  If you prefer something a little more jambandish, I would say to skip down to the Flamingo Cantina to see Strawberry Jam.  They are some young dudes that really rip.  I love the front man’s stage presence.  Please do not hold it against them that they hail from College Station.

Rock!
